TaskToTool

A plain-language starting point for everyday people. No technical background needed to explore.

01 / UNDERSTAND

What is an AI assistant?

A computer tool you can ask to help with a task, such as explaining a topic or preparing a draft. You give it instructions in everyday language. It can sound confident and still be wrong.

A bot is an assistant set up for a particular job. A GitHub project is software that may need installation and technical help.

02 / CHOOSE

How to pick one

  1. Pick one small task: “Help me understand this topic.”
  2. Look for “Lower setup” and read the listing’s limits.
  3. Open the original source to check accounts, price and access.
  4. Try a harmless example and check its answer against original sources.

Lower setup is our estimate of effort, not a promise that a tool is easy, free or available.

03 / STAY IN CONTROL

Safety tips

  • Keep passwords, private documents and other people’s personal details out of your prompts.
  • Check names, numbers and citations yourself before sharing an answer.
  • Review every draft. Ask a qualified person about important health, legal or money decisions.
  • Check permissions before connecting an account. Stop if a tool asks for access you do not understand.

About these dates

Source dates come from a saved source snapshot where available, otherwise the original supplied data. They do not show when we tested a tool. “Source checked” is an imported snapshot label; these tools are not hands-on tested. Setup levels are our estimates.
